Fund Raising
Even though our service is provided solely by volunteers, our branch needs over £35,000 each year to keep running. We have to raise all of that ourselves as a charity, so fundraising is an important part of making sure we can provide our service to callers.
Our Associate Samaritans lead our fundraising work, but it is something that everyone in the branch can get involved with, and we always welcome the generous support of others outside the branch in helping to raise the funds we need.
How we raise funds
We use a variety of methods to raise funds to keep us going. Street and Store collections continue to be a large source of income, and static collecting boxes and stalls at fairs and events are also important. Increasingly one-off special events provide more and more of our income, including sponsorship events, and support from other organisations. An excellent example is the support we have received from the Acupuncture Clinic in Portland Road, Hove, who raised more than £2000 through Artist Open House events whilst we were been their charity of the year in 2009. Our volunteers also raise money – for example 5 volunteers completed the sponsored national Samaritans walk this year, bringing in over £1000, and another organised a great choir concert. All of these sums add up to us being able to provide another year of emotional support.
Our Charity Shop
In 2009 we established a new charity shop to help give us a sustainable source of income. Our shop in George Street, Hove, started to welcome customers in June 2009, and has been a hit in the local area. To find out more about the charity shop email shop@brightonsamaritans.org, or drop in to meet the volunteers and shop manager.
